Translational application of real-time phase-contrast MRI to determine blood- and cerebrospinal fluid flow characteristics in various neurological diseases
Using real-time phase-contrast MRI (RT-PC MRI) enables us to determine flow velocities and flow volumes of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood flow in extra- and intracerebral vessels. Cerebral blood flow as well as well as CSF-circulation play an important role in multiple neurological diseases like ischemic stroke, different forms of hydrocephalus and cerebral sinus vein thrombosis. Aim of our working group is to use RT-PC MRI to better understand mechanisms of cerebral autoregulation in real time and under various conditions (e.g. occlusions of large extra- and intracranial arteries), to investigate the interplay between arterial-, venous- and CSF flow in various pathological conditions and to provide the basis for routine clinical application of this imaging technique.
