Multimodal Imaging of aspects of the gylmphatic System

The glymphatic system is a waste clearing system of the brain to eliminate soluble proteins and metabolites from the central nervous system. Disturbances of the glymphatic system seem to be associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Rythmicity of cerebrospinal fluid flow may play a crucial role in a fully functioning glymphatic system. Therefore, dysfunction of the glymphatic system could act as an explanation in cognitive decline in patients with cardiac disease. Especially in patients with atrial fibrillation or heart failure. Also in other diseases, such as delirium, disturbances in the glymphatic systems could play a role in the pathophysiological explanation. The aim is to visualize and understand the underlying mechanisms via MR-Imaging and provide a basis for a target for possible therapies.
