Two focal points under one roof
Currently, around 350,000 deaths per year and thus around 40% of all deaths in Germany are attributable to cardiovascular, neurological and neuro-muscular diseases. The clinical and social relevance of these diseases is therefore considerable, particularly in view of demographic trends. A significant increase in neurodegenerative diseases is expected in the coming years.
The Heart & Brain Center Göttingen (HBCG) of the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) will research the interdependencies and common mechanisms of cardiovascular, neurological and neuro-muscular diseases in a purpose-built research building. The new building will create a previously non-existent joint research infrastructure by spatially linking two of the UMG's key research areas: cardiovascular medicine and neurosciences.

Heart & Brain diseases: integrative research across organs
The Research Training Group (RTG) 2824 "Heart and Brain Diseases: Integrative Research Across Organ Boundaries", based at the Heart & Brain Center Göttingen, aims to expand the cross-organ approach through integrative cutting-edge research in the field of heart and brain diseases in combination with top-class training of doctoral students* in the natural sciences and medicine.
It will be funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from April 2023.
