Research focus on cardiology & pneumology

Heart & Brain Center Göttingen (HBCG)

The main research topic of the Clinic for Cardiology and Pneumology is heart muscle function and heart failure. As part of Heart & Brain, we are investigating how brain diseases affect heart function and how heart failure affects brain function, and in particular why and how cognitive dysfunction occurs in heart failure. Investigations are conducted at various levels from cardiac and brain organoids to clinical studies. We have made significant experimental and clinical findings on broken heart syndrome (Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy), which have been incorporated into guidelines. In addition, we are conducting research on sarcopenia (skeletal muscle weakness and loss) in heart failure and immobilization, and in close cooperation with the Lippoldsberg Clinic and Rehabilitation Centre and the Institute for Preventive Sports Medicine and Sports Cardiology at the Technical University in Munich, we are developing new possibilities for the biophysical and medicinal prevention of sarcopenia and the regeneration of skeletal muscle.
